NASA's advances in microsphere technology was further developed for commercial use in a technology spin-off partner program with Tech Traders (INSULADD®).
The Insuladd® Heat Relective Additive for paint was developed in conjunction with the NASA Space Program and is protected under US Patent Application No. 61,108,977
Finding an effective method of blocking the transer of heat during re-entry was something the NASA Space Program spent billions of dollars perfecting.
The space shuttle is essentially protected by tiles which are only one inch thick, and made primarily from Silica (SiO2), which is an incredible insulator.
A brief background to the ceramic micro sphere technology developed by NASA (in laymans terms)
It was advances in nano (micro) technology that enabled NASA to develop an effective heat shield for the shuttle, one that needed to be thin, light, and strong enough, to deflect heat in the most extreme temperature conditions.
What may be surprising is the total composition of these tiles. They are roughly 10 percent silica fibers (made rigid by ceramic bonding) and 90 percent empty space!
Nano-Technology
The reflective coatings industry, although a newcomer to the market, is fast being adopted as a solution to many heating and cooling challenges.
We have included the following for those not familiar with Coated Hollow Core Ceramic Microsphere Technology.
This information will be of value to those who need or want further information (or reassurance) on the effectiveness of this technology as a potential solution to heating and cooling situations involving heat transfer.

Distribuco International Ltd are the importing agents for Insuladd® Paint Additives into New Zealand.
Insuladd® are world leaders in heat reflecting and insulating paint additive technology.
The result of this spin-off venture is a heat deflecting powder additive that forms a super thin heat deflecting layer when added into paint.
